What a single lookup tells you

People usually come here with four questions: Is it free? Who has it? When does it expire? Where does the DNS point? The result page answers them all at once.

If you only want to know whether a name is still free, just type it in the box — we will tell you right away.

Availability check

If a domain has no record at the registry, it is available. Every result also shows exactly when the check was made.

Ownership & registrar

See which registrar the domain was registered through and any contact data that is publicly published. When fields are hidden, we explain why.

Registration & expiry dates

Track creation, update and expiry dates as calendar days and as a days-left counter, so you never miss a name that is about to drop.

Nameservers & status codes

Inspect which DNS servers the domain uses, whether it is DNSSEC-signed, and which EPP statuses such as transfer locks apply.

Frequently asked questions

What does a WHOIS lookup show?
It shows the domain name itself, the registrar, the creation, update and expiry dates, nameservers, EPP status codes and DNSSEC state. The owner's name, address, email and phone have been masked for most extensions since 2018 — they only appear when registry policy and data-protection law allow it.
Can WHOIS tell me who owns a domain?
Sometimes. Where there is no privacy protection and the registry still publishes personal data, you may see the owner. For private registrations you will only see the registrar's or privacy service's contact channel. If you want to reach the owner, use the offer button on the result page.
How do I run a WHOIS lookup?
Type the domain into the search box and press Enter. The system tries the RDAP protocol first and falls back to a classic WHOIS (port 43) server if needed. Even if you paste a full URL, we extract the domain part automatically.
What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
WHOIS is a plain-text protocol from the 1980s and every registry formats it differently. RDAP is its standardised successor defined by ICANN: it runs over HTTPS and returns structured JSON. This site supports both and picks the route that gives the freshest data.
What is WHOIS privacy?
It is a service where the registrar replaces the owner's personal details with proxy details, so email addresses and phone numbers cannot be harvested for spam or fraud. Even with privacy on, the registrar usually offers a relay form to contact the owner.
How can WHOIS data be updated?
Only through the control panel of the registrar the domain is registered with. After the change reaches the registry it can take from a few minutes to a few hours to show here. Because we cache results briefly, you can use the "look up again" icon to force a fresh query.
Is WHOIS data always accurate?
Owner details are typed in by the registrant, so they can be wrong or outdated; ICANN requires yearly verification but enforcement is imperfect. Dates and nameservers, however, are generated by the registry itself and can be trusted.
What does the expiry date mean, and what happens when it passes?
It is the moment the registration term ends. If not renewed, the domain normally stays locked for a grace period of a few weeks, then for roughly 30 more days in the redemption period, and only afterwards becomes open for anyone to register. That is why expired names do not become free on one single day.
